Q: Do I need to know Python to participate?

A: Since the tutorials will be in Python, we recommend participants to get acquainted with Python syntax, so that they are able to follow the content. We recommend reviewing this introductory Python programming lesson before the workshop. You are welcome to use any programming language for project work but that would require finding suitable ML libraries.

Q: The tutorials do not cover topics that I need to learn for my project idea. Do I have to change the idea in order to attend this workshop?

A: It will be common that participants need to learn about topics not discussed in the tutorials since there is very limited time to cover everything. The goal of the project time would be to dive deeper into your task, and learn by doing. Hopefully, there will be other people at the event working on similar topics, and discussing your challenges with the helpers will be productive.

Q: I want to build a chatbot! Can you help me?

A: Our tutorials cover foundation models and the methods that power chatbots, but we don’t focus on chatbot-building specifically. You are welcome to pursue building a chatbot during your project time, and instructors can point you toward relevant resources. However, if your primary interest is in LLM-powered applications (chatbots, assistants, agents) rather than applying AI methods to research questions, this program might not be the best fit.

Q: I want to find the right AI tool for my work, but I have no experience with programming or machine learning. Is this event a good fit for me?

A: The workshop focuses on building and applying models for scientific data analysis, which requires writing code and understanding machine learning concepts. If you’re looking to use AI tools without programming, then there are other resources better suited to that goal.

Q: Can I apply to this workshop if I am not affiliated with UW?

A: The workshop will prioritize UW participants, but if we have space we can also accommodate some outside participants.

Q: Am I required to participate in all tutorials and activities?

A: Yes, participation is mandatory for all days that you have signed up for. We expect all participants to be actively engaged in all workshop activities. In the event of an emergency, please let the organizers know as soon as possible so we can help you stay on track.
